My Highlight of the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala

Of course – and deservedly – the great Lionel Messi has won the FIFA Footballer of the Year Award, and he did it for the third time in a row. Messi was awarded the 2011 Ballon d’Or on Monday at a star-studded ceremony in Zurich, co-presented by former Netherlands international Ruud Gullit and Kay Murray from Real Madrid TV. The 24-year-old Barcelona and Argentina forward finished ahead of his Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Barca team-mate Xavi. Messi becomes only the third man to win the World Player of the Year award three times, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo being the other two.

Though the Monday evening in Zurich was packed with football stars, I think most pleasing for the Football United-blogger community (now known as Golbox), was to see Kay Murray co-present the prestigious event! I think Kay was fabulous yesterday, and her presentation was “entzückend”, as the Swiss “Tagesanzeiger” described it. But judge yourself:

Kay, a Middlesbrough-born football journalist, was one of the very first people to bring their blog over to Golbox (or FootballUnited as it was known then). Her blog, FootballBarbie, was the first blog from Europe outside the UK that was – and still is – hosted by Golbox, and my blog was the second one from the continent to be published with Golbox.

As Sam Haseltine from Golbox has put it some days ago, the network has been proud to host Kay’s blog over the years and work with her to get the best out of it. And I think everybody connected with FootballUnited / Golbox was happy for Kay last night, and also a little proud to have her blog hosted in the same network. Congratulations, Kay!

Almost two years ago, I had the pleasure to meet Kay and Sam in London at the Emirates.

Here’s the picture (right), taken before the Arsenal v West Ham game, and here are Kay’s and my blogs on that afternoon/weekend:

Btw: I hope the author of the German version of will read my article, feel embarrassed about his ignorance and apologize to Kay that he has got her name wrong, writing “die Journalistin Mary Kay übernahm die Moderation des Abends”.
